A team of Worksop anglers won top prize after outfishing the competition at a national event.

The annual Furniture Industry Trust (FIT) match was fished in July at Coventry’s Meadowland Fisheries.

The Eyres of Worksop team, consisting of John Eves, Chris Eves, Stephen Hill and Stuart Brumpton, beat a formidable field, featuring teams from as far afield as Lincolnshire and Kent to win the team event.

Such was the dominance of the Worksop quartet that their total weight of 132lbs was over double that of their nearest rivals.

There was double delight for John, who also took home the individual trophy from the event, tipping the scales with 54lbs of carp and skimmers to top the leaderboard - 2lb more than the second place team total.

Speaking to the Guardian, he said: “There was a lower turnout this year but we were up against good sides, we just must have been doing something right on the day.”

“It’s a very fair lake with all the pegs on one bank, and the weather wasn’t great for fishing, so we’re very pleased with the win.”

The FIT event has not been held for the past two years for financial reasons, so the Eyres foursome’s victory sees them retain the crown they won in 2010.

With successive victories under their belt, the team are already looking forward to going for three in a row in next year’s competition.

John added: “We were fishing pellet waggler for the full five hours and so was everyone else, but for some reason the carp came to us and not to them. It’s a lovely event and they look after you while you’re there - we’re definitely looking to book in next year.”
