Ungritted roads make for a hazardous ride for local cyclists

Bike handling skills of the highest order were required by the Retford Wheelers on Sunday, during their ride to Blaxton.

Most of the route had not been gritted, making country lanes hazardous.

Meanwhile Wheeler Paul Austin escaped the cold weather, preferring another visit to Manchester Velodrome for a training session with the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists.

Retford and District Wheelers Strava League changed little from the previous week, being headed by Tony Siveter who covered 244.8km followed by Paul Austin with 219.3km and Peter Smith in third with 198km.

Local riders may like to know a number of the Retford Wheelers meet at 7pm on Wednesday evenings outside the Whitehouses for a training ride around the perimeter of the town. These rides cover a distance of about 25 miles and are open to anyone who is prepared for a fast work out.

The club ride this Sunday will be to Rother Valley Country Park, both groups are to meet in Retford market square at 9.30am.

The route will be hilly and the distance about 50 miles for the round trip.
