Dinnington Rugby Club’s ladies won their inaugural TAG rugby tournament on Saturday, just nine months since the section was set up.
Tina Cannadine began the club’s ladies rugby activities with a ladies’ fitness session at Lodge Lane, with the aim of helping women work on fitness. As the concept grew, Chris Ross got involved to help coach the ladies, and before long 30 to 35 were turning up to training nights.
The success of the ladies section then led to their first ever TAG rugby event, organised with help from local Rugby Football Union representative Olly Dixon.
Teams from Dinnington, Barnsley and Castleford took part, as teenagers and women in the 40s and 50s donned the Dinnington Rugby Club colours, in searing heat. Over four hours the teams were whittled down, until a team from Barnsley took on one of the host teams, and the trophy was to remain at Lodge Lane.
A club spokesperson said: “As was the case in the other games, the Dinnington ladies faced youthful opposition and in a close game managed to shade it and come away with the trophy.”
“It was a well deserved win and a great day was had by all teams and supporters.”
