Local all-rounders Ian Lilley and Andy Pettinger are testament that the Trent is back on form.
In fact, my opinion is, it’s never been off form – just few are fishing our rivers, preferring the almost guaranteed big weights of commercials.
Andy is pictured here with a barbel at 12lb, one of two double figure barbel he landed on the same day.
Both anglers have dedicated a lot of the season to fishing the tidal reaches, netting a variety of species including barbel, bream, perch, eels, chub, zander and even dabs.
Rivers certainly offer a wide range of species.
You just never know what’s going to pick up the bait next, which makes them such interesting waters.
We’re also spoilt for choice with the Trent, Idle and Maun on our doorstep and the Witham, Till, Torn and River Don within easy travelling distance.
All are teeming with fish so give our rivers a try.

Toft Newton Reservoir: The new trout season will start on 31st January but in the meantime, Toft are running a series of weekend ‘any method’ days for a nominal fee of £10.
Toft may be renowned for its big perch and pike but few fish for their huge specimen roach and bream so this is a good opportunity to try for them.
