A HEAVY crash failed to stop Dean Hipwell at Brands Hatch last weekend, in the British Supersport Championship.

The Harworth rider was on the final lap of Saturday’s qualifying session when he came round Sheene Curve at 90mph and lost the front end, his Globalnet Telecoms Yamaha carthweeling off the track and over the tyre wall.

Hipwell escaped unharmed but his bike was damaged extensively.

Despite the setback he started in 16th place on the grid for Sunday morning’s qualifying race, three 10ths of a second outside the top 10.

The CDH Racing Team spent half the night rebuilding the bike and Hipwell’s fastest lap time in qualifying put him 20th on the grid for the race.

With less than half of the race completed a red flag, following a bad crash, saw the race restricted to a six-lap sprint and Hipwell managed to pass the rider in front to bring the bike home in 12th place.

A team spokesman said: “We were happy with the result and the seven championship points.”
