THE second round of the 2012 Lincolnshire League saw Gainsborough Dolphins travel to the Scartho Pool at Grimsby to compete against two teams from host club Cleethorpes and District (CADS), Scunthorpe Anchor and Grantham.
The late withdrawal of Grantham meant only four teams were in action with Dolphins hoping to finish second to give them a chance of reaching the top six gala in round three. They battled hard for this second spot against the Anchor outfit all night but lost out to them by 12 points, a deficit reflected by six unfortunate disqualifications and absent swimmers due to other commitments.
Leading the way on the night the boys 12/under squad recorded maximum points in the individual events with both Ewan McKay (50m breaststroke and freestyle) and Will Walmsley (50m backstroke and butterfly) securing wins.
Alongside Ethan Burton and Billy Thorpe they finished second in the medley relay, with Reuben Gidlow replacing Ethan for the freestyle relay for a third place finish.
The girls 10/u group swam superbly without much luck as both Chloe Huddart (50m freestyle) and Lydia Smith (50m breaststroke) were beaten into second place in very close finishes as was the medley relay quartet containing Chloe, Lucie Blades, Harriet Webster and Lily Talbot. Lucie secured third in the 50m backstroke whilst she produced a storming last leg to claim victory alongside Lydia, Harriet and Chloe in the freestyle relay, with Chloe securing victory in the 50m butterfly in another tight finish.
Also winning both his individual events on the night was Aarron Smith in the boys 14/u age group as he won the 100m butterfly and backstroke, while in the girls equivalent Georgia McKay came second in the 100m backstroke.
Georgia was joined by Ella Marsh, Emma Gosling and Zarah Thomas as they came third in the freestyle relay, as did the girls 12/u quartet of Katie Bindon, Lydia Waring, Hollie Watkins and Emma Gosling in their medley event. Both Lydia (50m breaststroke) and Hollie (50m butterfly) finished third in their individual races as did Jimmy Purdy in the boys 10/u 50m breaststroke.
In the Men’s Open both James Smith and Dave Trickett collected second places in their respective 100m backstroke and breaststroke races, with the former also finishing third in the 100m freestyle. Alongside Pete Trickett and Jack Boulton they finished third in both the freestyle and medley relay events.
The Ladies Open contributed three more third places through Megan Stevenson (100m backstroke), Harriett Baird (100m freestyle) and Tonicha Watson (100m breaststroke) with this trio being joined by Robyn Dand to claim to excellent second places in both their freestyle and medley relays.
The contribution of the rest of the squad was invaluable with special praise going to Angus Lilley, Zaki Thomas, Aidan Clover and Amy Evans for their efforts. The Club wishes to thank all the coaches, officials and supporters for their involvement and dedication on the night.
Final result: 1, CADS Red 206 points; 2, Scunthorpe Anchor 151; 3, Gainsborough Dolphins 139; 4, CADS White 132.
