50-mile Rotherham race turns 30

THE Rowbotham’s Round Rotherham 50-mile race celebrates its 30th birthday this weekend, with a bumper entry.

A record field of 400 walkers, runners and relay teams will take part in the event, first set up during the 1980s steel strike by the late Ralph Rowbotham.

For Rotherham Harrier Les Crownshaw, from Firbeck, the 50 miles will be a walk in the park, after taking on the mammoth task of running from John O’Groats to Lands End earlier this year to celebrate his 60th birthday and retirement.

Not only did he complete the 900 miles, but in the process raised £2,000 for Bluebell Wood Hospice.
