Retford sport came out on top at the annual Bassetlaw Sports Awards at Worksop College – with Retford Athletics Club doing particularly well.
The athletics club took a hat-trick of awards away from the Bassetlaw Council Sports Development Team organised event.“Winning the award is a real privilege,” she said.
Their awards were presented by special guest Sophie Wells MBE, a dressage star, who picked up a hat-trick of medals at the 2012 London Paralympic Games.
Gary Longden’s dedication to Retford Athletics Club over a decade earned him the Lifetime Achievement award, and he was credited with transforming the junior section and guiding them to a successful acquisition of the lease for Oaklands Playing Fields.
The club also scooped Club of the Year and the Coach of the Year award for Dave Maiden, who oversees more than 30 athletes of varying ability.
Junior Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Ordall Bridon Cricket Club scorer Samuel Stringfellow for his work supporting both the top level and junior cricket sides.
A fantastic season, during which they took an amazing five out of six possible trophies, helped Retford United Under 15 girls to take the Junior Community Sports Team prize.
