Lindrick junior golfer Callum Macfie capped a strong season by winning the 2014 Nottinghamshire Schools Match Play Championship at Sherwood Forest Golf Club.
The 13-year-old, who attends Tuxford Academy, faced a tough draw that saw him having to play all three of his preliminary rounds away at Worksop Golf Club against two of Nottinghamshire’s Under 16 boys and an up and coming Under 14 star.
First he beat Luca Durrant, 1up.
In his second match he overcame Joe Turner-Bennett 5&4, and thenbeat Kyle Thorpe to qualify for the final.
The final, against Mapperley Golf Club’s Cameron Steedman, another Nottinghamshire Under 16 player, turned out to be a close and exciting match and went all the way to the final hole.
Macfie needed to sink a nerve jangling four foot putt to take the title 1up, and held his nerve.
The local youngster who shot a magnificent one over gross, adds his name to the same trophy as recently turned professional Liam Taylor of Sherwood Forest Golf Club and this year’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship winner, Oliver Wilson.
Macfie was recently awarded a place in England’s Under 16 development squad,
Sherwood Forest Golf Club captain and Ian Anderson, Nottinghamshire Schools Golf Association organiser, presented the trophy to the new county champion.
