A week to forget for Retford United saw them hammered in midweek Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division action at Clipstone before a home FA Vase exit to Loughborough University on Saturday.

It was ‘Badgers cull time’ at Clipstone in midweek as they were put to the sword 7-0 by the promoted Cobras, Alec Denton scoring three of them.

A 4-1 win away at Blaby and Whetstone Athletic had sent Retford into the second qualifying round of the FA Vase and booked a home tie with Midland League Premier Division strugglers Loughborough University last Saturday which looked the perfect chance to bounce back.

But it was the Students handing out the lessons as they came away with a 2-0 victory.

Ben Ward Cochrane gave them a 19th minute lead and, with Retford doing all they could to find an equaliser, they conceded a second eight minutes from time, scored by Josh Hill.

The Badgers must now regroup and prepare for Saturday’s big game when they need to get back on track against leaders Tadcaster Albion (3pm).
