Retford United were taken to a replay in the FA Cup’s extra preliminary round, after a 2-2 draw at home to Stapenhill on Saturday.
Almost 100 watched at the Jones and Co Stadium, as the Badgers secured their third consecutive draw.
United were quickly out of the blocks with a shot by Jimmy Walker going just wide in the first minute, then Jack Steadman tried his luck with an effort straight at the keeper.
Stapenhill’s first attack led to a corner with Jamie Disney’s effort well blocked.
Bobby Johnson showed good control to lay off for Liam Wilkin, he chested the ball down but the effort lacked power and rolled wide.
Stapenhill’s best chance in the first half fell to Disney but his header was cleared off the line.
Retford thought they had taken the lead as Wilkin chipped the ball over an advancing Ben Gough, only for the effort to drop the wrong side of the post.
Minutes before the break, a shot by Johnson rattled the crossbar.
United applied more pressure early in the second half, a corner blocked three times as Stapenhill frantically tried the clear.
But in the 52nd minute, Retford were in front as Wilkin did well to stay composed in front of goal to pick up Walker’s pass and slot into the net past Gough.
United nearly had another with a quick free kick from Stannard finding Wilkin in front of goal, but somehow a defnder managed to get a touch and clear the chance.
Retford’s lead only lasted four minutes as Stapenhill were level through a good strike from Alex Rowland into the top corner.
And the visitors were in front two minutes later, a low drive cutting in from the right for Matt Weightman to put the ball past Fuller at his near post.
On 69 minutes Retford were deservedly level, Wilkin smashing home after a good ball in from Stannard.
In the final stages, a cross from Danny Smith found Wilkin but his looping header was just over, then in the dying minutes, Ben Muirhead’s cross from the left found the head of Kyle Hadley, his header just wide again.
Retford travel to Stapenhill on Wednesday evening for the replay, which will now postpone the away game at Albion Sports.
