THE SHARP BLADE: Roberto di Matteo to be new Sheffield United boss?

THE worst Blades season for many a year has finally drawn to a close.

There has not been much to cheer this year for us Unitedites, but I am sure many Blades breathed a sigh of relief this week at the news of Mickey Adams’ departure.

Adams’ is a nice guy, but he never really won over the fans, and ultimately he just was not up to the job in hand.

Kevin McCabe has learnt from the mistake of last year - leaving Kevin Blackwell in charge over the summer, only to bomb him out two games into the new campaign.

There is a strong argument that this decision sowed the seeds of relegation. Blackwell should either have been shown the door at the end of last season, or kept on and given more of a chance than just a couple of matches.

Whether you were for or against Adams’ dismissal, the fact is the timing of it is good and will give the new manager the whole close season to plan, bring in who he wants, and work work with the squad.

McCabe’s next decision - who to appoint to replace Adams - could be one of the most critical he has ever taken, one that will shape the very future of Sheffield United Football Club.

Already speculation is rife as to who will be the new gaffer at the Lane.

Roberto di Matteo, John Pemberton, Craig Short, Peter Reid, Aidy Boothroyd, and Russell Slade are among those who have been linked with the job.

I suspect many Blades are setting themselves up for a fall if they are expecting di Matteo to take the hot seat.

The Italian would not come cheap, and he may not fancy having to try and put together a promotion push on a shoestring.

Although I think he would be a great choice to kickstart a new era at Bramall Lane, I just can’t see it happening.

As for the others on that list, the prospect of Short, Reid or Boothroyd does not fill me with much glee, but Russell Slade or Pembo, although the latter is untested at senior level, could be good appointments.

But all this is just speculation, and I’m sure there will be plenty of heated debate amongst Blades fans until the new boss is unveiled.

Lets just hope it’s worth the wait.
