The Blues Club jumped from third to top of the Lincoln Saturday Football League table on Saturday, thanks to a big win and events elsewhere.
League leaders Birchwood United failed to score for the first time this season as they went down 1-0 at fourth placed Horncastle Town Reserves.
Luke Blondel got the all-important winner with his 11th goal of the season.
It was Birchwood’s first defeat in 19 games but they did not only lose for the first time, they conceded top spot to Gainsborough’s The Blues Club who started the day in third place.
RM Imp, in second place on goal difference, could have gone top, but saw their opponents Retford Town, fail to fulfil the fixture.
No doubt the League Management Committee will award RM Imp the points at their next meeting.
But before that eventuality, The Blues Club took full advantage of the circumstances.
They started the day in third place, a single point behind the top two.
But by the end of the afternoon their seventh home game without a defeat. a 4-1 victory over Ruston Sports Reserves, saw them leapfrog both Birchwood United and RM Imp.
It was Ruston’s fifth successive away defeat.
Joe Owen bagged himself a brace, taking his personal tally to 10 for the season, while Leon Shepherd scored his 14th, and the league’s top scorer Lee Bognar claimed the Blues Club’s fourth - his 23rd for the season.
Ruston’s goal came courtesy of an own goal.
On Saturday The Blues Club are at home to Saxilby Athletic in the quarter-finals of the David Cooper Cup.
Kick-off at Gainsborough Academy is 1.30pm.
