It’s been a busy week, and it will be a busy week ahead for Retford United as the season draws ever closer.
The Badgers beat Askern Welfare last Wednesday evening in a thrilling encounter that saw eight goals, United running out 5-3 winners.
It was a return to the club for former Badger Ollie Chappell, who signed before the game. And he made an instant impact, opening the scoring after only 13 minutes.
A superb drive from the edge of the box marked his return with a goal.
Askern were level shortly after, but their lead lasted only a minute before Dean Rick put United back ahead with a thunderous effort that went in off the bar.
The visitors fought back for a second time on 21 minutes to take the sides in level at the break.
Chappell grabbed his second of the night, ten minutes into the second half, before Steve Owens, making his return to the side made no mistake to put United 4-2 up and cruising to the win.
Former United defender Ian Farmery hauled his side back into the match 60 seconds later with a good strike from distance, and it was left to Will Tomlinson to put the game beyond doubt with the final goal on 72 minutes, and secure the 5-3 win.
United now face Belper Town on Wednesday evening at Cannon Park before making a trip to Carlton Town next Saturday.
Manager Brett Marshall is expected to pick from a full squad for the visit of Belper and the final preparations will be in place over the three remaining pre-season games, as the season starts at home to Barton Town on Saturday 6th August.
n Meanwhile, Retford’s Ladies were in action, beating Handsworth FC Ladies 1-0, thanks to a second half Hayley Revill goal at Cannon Park last Wednesday.
Their next match will be against their tenants, Sheffield Wednesday Womens FC on Thursday at Cannon Park, with the Sheffield side fresh from their 5-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra last Sunday.
