In last week’s Guardian the report on the official opening of the Veolia and Notts County Council waste transfer station at Claylands near the A57 is , in my view, misleading.
Councillor Creamer of the county council environment and sustainability committee implies that the purpose is to reduce landfill.
In fact I understand the waste will be sent to Veolia’s incinerator at Sheffield Parkway which will increase the number of wagons on the A57 and will contribute to particulate matter in the atmosphere.
The report states that Veolia supports the aim of increasing the amount of waste that is recycled to 52 per cent by 2020. Bassetlaw has a shameful recycling record and simply burning plastics etc as free fuel for Veolia is simply avoiding proper recycling initiatives which would save resources, create jobs and reduce carbon emissions to the atmosphere.
