A former military man carried out a ‘serious assault’ beside the canal in Retford.

Robert Mark McCarthy, 42, of Chapelgate Court, Retford, was found guilty of common assault after a trial.

Worksop magistrates heard how he and his victim knew eachother but had fallen out. They bumped into eachother on 11th July 2013. When the victim extended his hand to shake it, McCarthy punched him in the face, shouting and swearing.

Defending, Andrew Osborne, said he had shown ‘sympathy and remorse’.

Magistrate Melvyn Morris said it was a ‘serious assault’ giving a six month curfew, two year restraining order, £100 compensation and £100 costs.
