A TOWN councillor from Bingham near Nottingham has been forced to apologise after tweeting that people from Gainsborough are ‘in-bred’.

Alan Harvey, a Bingham Town Councillor posted on the Twitter messaging site: “Gainsborough is a bit like Grantham, only with a bit more in-breeding.”

Several media sources have since contacted Coun Harvey to ask why he made such an offensive comment, and he has admitted he ‘should have known better’.

He said the comment was made in the heat of the moment while he and his wife were visiting Gainsborough.

They were apparently noting how similar the town is to Grantham when his wife was verbally abused, leading Mr Harvey to make the ill-advised comment.

He said: “I lost my rag and put on a tweet. I tried to withdraw it immediately but I couldn’t so I had to wait until I got home.”

“It was a stupid mistake on my part.”

Shortly after removing his first post, he tweeted: “Apologies for inappropriate tweet about Gainsborough sent in heat of moment following upset in the town. I should know better. Apols again.”

But this fired up further anger from Grantham folk, leading him to apologise again.

He tweeted: “Just been rightly pointed out that my apology yesterday didn’t mention Grantham which as a frequent visitor, I am more than happy to rectify.”
