GRITTERS out to prepare for freezing weather in Nottinghamshire tonight

Gritting crews are set to take to roads across Nottinghamshire as road surface temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing tonight (January 7).

The county council’s 23 gritting vehicles are due to take to the roads from 8pm as clearer skies lead to a dry and cold night with light winds.

This will allow road surface temperatures to fall widely below freezing, but with a risk of frost and some icy patches.

This is the first time the gritters will have been out this year, and only the 10th time this winter so far.

The last time they were out was on New Year’s Eve and before that, Christmas Eve.

The council currently has 17899.12 tonnes of salt stored in its four grit barns.

A council spokesman said it is in a strong position to deal with the worst winter conditions.
