BASSETLAW COUNCIL has denied claims it is to start staking headstones again, except for in exceptional circumstances.
Coun Mike Pugsley, portfolio holder for environment and housing said: “The council is not planning to stake headstones except in exceptional circumstances and always after having done everything possible to trace and consult with the relatives concerned.”
“The council will continue its periodic safety inspections, taking remedial action where necessary. The authority has a legal responsibility to advise interested parties about the inspections and about the most appropriate measures, including securing the memorial or cordoning off the area. If this is impossible headstones could be laid flat or staked.”
