Editor’s Comment: Elderly are treated abysmally

I was sad to hear that the future of a weekly pensioner’s lunch club is in doubt after the previous funding dried up.

Notts County Council previously funded the club, but has now cut this funding as it tries to save £154 million from its budget.

I have spoken in this column before about the importance of trying to protect the most vulnerable in our community in the face of these cuts.

This club, held at the Crossing on Worksop, provides a hot meal, and more importantly, a place for the elderly to socialise.

Some of the users of this service are as old as 95 and it’s a crying shame that it looks like it will be lost.

In this country the elderly are treated abysmally, and this is yet another example of that.
