Riots spreads to Nottinghamshire

NOTTS Police has mounted a major policing operation in response to rioting started in the city last night (Monday).

As many as 40 private vehicles were damaged, windows of houses smashed and a container of some 200 tyres set alight.

A local police station was also targeted.

Two people have been arrested and they remain in police custody.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Scarrott said: “What provoked a night of serious disorder is not clear, but I can only assume that a mindless minority may have somehow, and perversely, felt motivated by the appalling events in London in the last few days.”

“The terrible destruction caused to London over three nights of rioting cannot, and will not, be replicated in Nottingham, and I warn anyone who plans to get involved in any criminality tonight or in the nights to come to know that we will identify you and ensure you are prosecuted.”

The force has stated it has not sent any officers to assist the Metropolitan Police combat the London riots.
