Musical theatre group produces showstopper

Shows performed by a new musical theatre company are proving so popular that the latest has one night sold out already – and it’s not hitting the stage until September.

Wales Musical Theatre Company officially began life in October last year, although many of the members already knew each other through their connections with Wales Methodist Church.

Their latest Showstoppers show will feature songs from hit musicals and will be staged at Worksop’s Acorn Theatre for four days from 14th to 17th September.

Company business manager Jayne Lemm said that the Saturday night performance on 17th September was already sold out.

She said the theatre group has 70 playing and non-playing members.

“This is the first musical theatre company that we know of in the Wales and Kiveton area,” said Mrs Lemm.

“It is definitely a community project, with an age group from five to 75 years of age.”

“We get members from the surrounding areas of Wales, Kiveton Park, Killamarsh, Aston and even some as far away as Doncaster and Worksop.”

Mrs Lemm said the group began performing two Showstopper Shows at The Acorn Theatre in Worksop when they first came together as a group.

They first got together through their association with Wales Methodist Chapel which is famous locally for its promotion of the arts.

In particular it is known for the annual pantomimes which are produced by the Wales Methodist players, under the direction of Roy Staniforth MBE.

He has been instrumental in producing the pantomimes for the past 65 years which have been held at various venues, most recently The Montgomery Hall in Sheffield.

He has also given help and guidance to the new Wales Musical Theatre Company.

Wales Musical Theatre Company will be at the Acorn Theatre in Worksop from 14th to 17th September.

They will be performing songs from such hit musical shows Oklahoma, Carousel, Fiddler on the Roof and Bugsy Malone.

“Those are just a few of the shows we will be performing songs from, under the guidance of our musical director David Burgess,” said Mrs Lemm.

She said there were a few tickets left for the Friday evening show on 16th September and there was still plenty of availability for the Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th evenings and Saturday 17th matinee. Mrs Lemm said: “The demand for tickets has been so high that our producer Nick Challenger has taken the decision to perform an extra show on the Saturday afternoon at 2.30pm. Ticket prices are £9 adults and £7 for children and OAPs.”

Prices have been held from last year.
