I-PACE heralds “new chapter” for British car firm
Jaguar has announced its first-ever electric car – a “performance SUV” called the I-PACE.
Details of the car were revealed at the Los Angeles Car Show this morning.
Jaguar said that using an all-new electric vehicle architecture its designers and engineers have been able to “tear up the rule book on usability”.
Director of design, Ian Callum, told the media: “The I-PACE Concept is a radical departure for electric vehicles. It represents the next generation of battery electric vehicle design…and opens a new chapter in the history of our legendary brand.”
The luxury car firm said that the five-seat I-PACE will have a footprint smaller than a mid-sized SUV yet offer more passenger and luggage space than vehicles in the class above thanks to its radical design.
Without an engine to worry about, design director Ian Callum was free to create a cab-forward design. This frees up more space inside for passengers who, Jaguar say, will be treated to cutting-edge technology and high-end materials.
Callum said: “With the I-PACE Concept, the revolution is in the profile, not the design language.
“I was determined from the very beginning of this project to create a design which reflected [the] change in the mechanics of the car. This is what led to the sporty cab-forward profile rather than a car with a bonnet and an engine.”

Jaguar say the interior will be a driver-focused environment offer a sporting driving position while treating passengers to a blend of high-tech and traditional natural materials.
While Jaguar was keen to play up the I-PACE’s practicality and versatility there was also a lot of emphasis on its performance credentials.
Electric motors at the front and rear axles will deliver 395bhp and 516lb/ft to the road. That means a 0-60mph time of around four seconds yet a claimed 220-mile range.
Jaguar say that with four-wheel drive and immediate response from the electric motors the I-PACE will deliver a dynamic, sure-footed experience.
Chief engineer of vehicle integrity at Jaguar, Mike Cross, said: “When you get behind the wheel, the driving experience reflects the I-PACE Concept’s dynamic design. It’s a true Jaguar and we will prove that a zero emission vehicle can be a true driver’s car.”
The real thing
Jaguar also insisted that the I-PACE is a true representation of what will go on sale to the public.
Ian Callum added: “This isn’t just a concept. It is a preview of a five-seat production car that will be on the road in 2018. This will be Jaguar’s first-ever battery-powered electric vehicle and opens a new chapter in the history of our legendary brand.”
