New 220 petrol joins facelifted crossover’s engine range

A new 181bhp/221lb ft petrol engine has been added to the range of engines available in the facelifted Mercedes GLA crossover, revealed at the Detroit motor show. There’s also a new GLA range-topper, the Yellow Night Edition.

The 220 engine – which is only available with 4Matic four-wheel drive – is sandwiched by the GLA’s two existing petrol units, the 154bhp 200 and 211bhp 250. It joins the existing diesels, the 134bhp 200d and 175bhp 220d 4Matic, which offer up to 67.3mpg.

A 30mm hike in ride height has given the crossover a more rufty-tufty look. Redesigned bumpers, grille and alloys and new LED headlights complete the external changes. Keyless entry and a 360-degree camera have been added to the overall GLA options list.

On top of the general updates, the highest-performing AMG GLA 45 gets shorter gearing in the top five ratios of its seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The 376bhp/350lb ft output of its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine continues unchanged.

The Yellow Night Edition comes in black with yellow highlights and sits on colour-coded alloy wheels. It’s more heavily specced than the previous top model, the AMG Line Premium Plus, adding an AMG Performance steering wheel, seats wrapped in Artico leather and Dinamica microfibre material, and yellow-accented door sills, floor mats and air outlets.

UK prices for the updated entry-level GLA are expected to be just over £28,000, running to just over £46k for the AMG GLA 45.
