2016 LA Motor Show: what to expect

What cars will be the debut stars of this month’s Californian show?

We’re looking forward to some great model debuts at the forthcoming 2016 Los Angeles Motor Show. Here are our picks of what to look out for, starting on 14 November.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

You may have spied Alfa’s midsized SUV in an accidental promotional video appearance, while it’s also been caught on film testing, but the production Stelvio will make its official debut in LA. Sales will swiftly follow in the New Year, and we’re all hoping the 503bhp Giulia Quadrifoglio will eventually donate its engine to a super-hot version.

Audi A5 Cabriolet

Audi A5 Cabriolet

We’ll see the already-revealed drop-top Audi A5 in the metal in California. Full specs have been confirmed, but UK prices haven’t. We’re gambling on them starting at around £43,800.

Cadillac CT6 PHEV

Cadillac CT6 PHEV

CT6 plug-in hybrid is slated to come to the UK. Will it win over fans of the electrified BMW 7 Series? Cadillac hopes so, as sales of the current petrol-only CT6 haven’t been overwhelming here.

Cadillac Escala

Cadillac Escala

Four-door Cadillac Escala wears a striking liftback body on the rear-wheel-drive CT6 platform and uses a twin-turbocharged 4.2-litre V8. Concept version was well received at August’s Pebble Beach show; LA marks model’s mainstream debut.

Jaguar electric SUV

Jaguar Electric SUV

If talk of a late-2016 debut for Jaguar’s first electric EV is accurate, LA would be the perfect place to launch it – although nothing has been confirmed. The SUV has been spotted in development form, and could arrive in showrooms as early as 2018. Read more about it here.

Jeep Compass

Jeep Compass Trailhawk

Jeep will present its Compass to the public in LA, having revealed it in Brazil last month. Available in both two and four-wheel-drive, this sharp looker could steal European sales from the Nissan Qashqai.

Mazda CX-5

Mazda CX-5

Teaser image shows that Mazda CX-5 SUV apes CX-9 style. It also gets new infotainment and a plusher cabin, but will retain the outgoing model’s four-cylinder engines.

Mercedes-AMG E 63

Mercedes-AMG E 63 S

This variant of Mercedes’ most powerful series production four-door boasts 603bhp and a 3.4sec 0-62mph time. We’ve already viewed images of the E 63, but we will have to wait until early next year to see it in UK showrooms.

Mini Countryman

MINI Countryman

Will it debut in LA or won’t it? We’ve seen the spy shots of Mini’s Countryman SUV, and now we want to see the real thing. Using the same UKL1 platform as the recently launched Clubman, it’ll be larger and roomier than at present. A hybrid is on the cards, too.

Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition

Special-edition X-Trail (as it would be badged in Britain) capitalises on Star Wars film franchise. We’ll find out more about the Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition nearer its debut

Rezvani Beast Alpha

Rezvani Beast Alpha

Well, from the single image released so far, we can see this crazy car has unique sidewinder door openings – but that’s about it. The Rezvani Beast Alpha boasts a 500bhp 2.4-litre Honda engine.

Volkswagen Atlas

Volkswagen Atlas

VW hopes the US-focused Atlas SUV will help the brand regain lost face following the Dieselgate scandal. That makes it a pretty significant model, but it won’t be coming to Europe.

Volkswagen e-Golf

Volkswagen E-Golf

Revamped e-Golf will give up to 300km (186 miles) of zero-emissions driving, and should be making its debut in So Cal. Its predecessor costs from £31,680 and can do up to 118 miles on a charge.
