A BRAND-NEW multi-use games area is well under way at Manton Athletics Colliery Club.
The re-vamped ground was partially completed last week and will host a range of activities, including football games, track events, javelin, discus and shot put.
"Everybody has worked very hard on the project and it's an excellent facility not just for Manton but for the whole of Worksop and the surrounding area," said Keith Richardson, chairman of Manton Athletic Club.
The project was made possible after funding was secured from the Football Foundation, Sport England, WREN, Notts County Council and private donors.
The site features a sand pit, where sporting enthusiasts can take part in the long jump.
Work has also started on the new changing rooms and the front of the club house has already been demolished. Floodlighting at the site is due to be installed so that sporting activities can continue after dark.
The games area will be completed in the spring as the surface cannot be laid until winter is over.
"Once all this work is finished people will be able to use the new hard court area," said Mr Richardson.
Fencing is also currently being installed around the perimeter of the field while re-seeding of the field has been slightly delayed due to the wet summer.
"But despite this setback to the grass pitches, the club's committee members are delighted at how quickly the games area has been developed," said Mr Richardson.
And Bassetlaw MP John Mann has also welcomed the development.
He said: "I heard it said that these plans were dreams and nothing could be achieved in Manton. Well, dreams can come true and this will see the development of first class sporting facilities for the people of Worksop. I would like to thank all those who have worked hard to achieve this."
