Welbeck bowlers take on rivals from Blyth, Worksop and Ordsall

The cold and wet weather failed to deter Welbeck Abbey Bowls Club members from turning out in numbers and competing for The Walter Anderson Cup.

An annual tournament, it’s held in memory of Water, the late husband of club stalwart Jean Anderson.

Jean was on hand to present the replica cups after the pairs competition, which saw couples selected at random with legs played over 10 ends.

The winning pair was Marjorie Zillwood and Paul Lindley, with Hilary Wignell and David Gascoyne runners-up.

On 2nd June Welbeck took on Blyth at their home ground, before a match at Ordsall on 4th June.

Wednesday 10th saw them feature in the first leg of the annual cup match, Welbeck losing by just 11 points which they hope to recover in the second leg.

Next was a trip to Worksop Bowls Club, who overcame Welbeck, and announced that the next meeting of the sides will become a ‘trophy match’ played under strict rules.

The second leg will take place on Friday 10th July.

Welbeck Abbey Bowls Club are holding open evenings on Monday 22nd and Monday 29th June, as part of the Cuckney Festival, and will welcome newcomers to the sport to have a go at no cost.

Anyone interested is asked to wear flat shoes and visit the club at 6pm.
