Over 180 primary school children from across the district gathered at East Retford Rugby Club for the annual Cross Country Championships.
With 18 different schools taking part, competition was fierce over the 1,500 metre course, not only for individual honours, but also to make the 12-man boys and girls teams that will represent Bassetlaw in the Notts Schools Championships at Worksop College in February 2015.
The first three girls to finish were Freya Dolby of St Augustines and Ranby House pair Amelia Chrispin and Zara Isaacs.
Dan Wendon of Ranby C of E, St Augustines’ pupil Beau Moore and Zak Berridge from Prospect Hill were the first three boys.
Tony Wright from the council’s sports development team said: “At the moment, Bassetlaw seems to have some very talented cross country runners, which is a credit to their schools and their clubs.”
“I hope they enjoy competing for Bassetlaw on the County stage next year.”
In secondary school athletics, 16 of the best middle distance and cross country runners aged 12 to 16 were put through their paces at a tough pre-season training session, in addition to a mentoring session from Worksop College’s Oliver Dane.
Wright added: “Oliver had a great season last year and has competed in the English Schools Championships.”
“It was a great experience for these up-and-coming athletes to hear about Oliver’s experiences and training methods ahead of the first secondary schools cross country race on Saturday 4th October in Sutton in Ashfield.”
