A very impressive run from Retford Athletic Club’s Ben Harris saw him finish in first place at the penultimate Cross Country race of the 2014 series.
Sunday’s race was hosted by Clowne, one of the local clubs involved in the popular and competitive series.
In good, bright conditions for the run Harris completed the 5.5-mile course in a time of 36m 21s, a great performance on a tough hilly course, and the win was his second of the series, after victory at Killamarsh in January.
Joining Harris in the top 10 was Peter Barr who finished eighth in a time of 39m 27s.
Great performances from Mickey Taylor (41m 43s) and Andy Kinsley (41m 48s) saw them finish in 18th and 19th places respectively and gave Retford four of the top 20 places in a field of 168, helping them to third place in the men’s team competition.
Nicky Spinks was the first Retford lady back, finishing as third place lady in an impressive 44m 05s.
Next lady home for Retford was Katie Whelan who finished in 52m 58s.
There was a good run too from Tammy Haywood who finished just inside the top 30 (28th) with a good time of 55m 51s.
Retford had another fantastic turn out with 17 men and 10 ladies taking part.
The annual series also includes races at Killamarsh, Worksop, Retford and Handsworth.
This year the nominated charity for the event is Odyssey – www.odyssey.org.uk – who are a small charity helping people to rebuild their lives following treatment for cancer.
The final race of the series will take place at Handsworth on 2nd March.
