There’s a new player on the regional cycling race scene, after the launch of Bassetlaw outfit Broomwagon Racing Team.

The team is the brainchild of Holly Jones and rider Calum Lawson.

Jones’ family has always held a passion for motorsport, and her childhood dream was to run her own team.

But when her partner Lawson took up cycling and find his niche, she switched her attention to his new sport

Between them they decided to set up their own team, promising high ambition and no compromise.

Calum approached Heidi Cotton, the owner of Retford’s Broomwagon Velo Café and between them Broomwagon Racing Team was formed.

The team is run Jones, Lawson, Heidi and Richard Cotton, and Matt Hindmarsh who also rides for the team.

Liam Hindmarsh and Liam Davies – along with Lawson – makes up the team of four riders.

The team is in its infancy having been set up at the beginning of the summer and celebrated its launch opn Saturday at the Broomwagon Velo Café, but the results are already coming in thick and fast.

There have been regular podium positions for the two Liams at their youth events around the region and Hindmarsh is set to retain the yellow jersey at the Mallory Park League for his age group.

Lawson has been causing a storm as a Category 2 rider, with his first win at Middlesborough in July.

Matt Hindmarsh is a talented Time Trialer, having won a number of events and never yet failing to set a new personal best on every ride.

The team has started small, but thinks big with all of its riders aiming for national and international accreditation.

As main sponsor and with a significant roll in the growth and development of the team, the Cottons are instrumental in driving the team forward.

Lawson said: “The team has already generated a great deal of interest and has secured further sponsorship deals with a number of local businesses, like Upbeat Design, the Focus Collection, Jelly Bean Campers, Dr J Performance and Open Door Property Auctions.

“They are all on board and their logos are proudly displayed on the team kit and team car – look out for the riders around the area, in our trade mark orange Broomwagon Racing Team kit, we’re pretty hard to miss.”
