Waters on track in Euro comp

Track specialist Graeme Waters represented the Retford Wheelers and England in the European Masters Track Championship at the National Velodrome in Manchester.

The Championships were held over five days with over 200 riders from 12 European nations involved.

Waters competed in the 750 meter time trial for the 45-49 age group, finishing in a disappointing 12th place with 56.048 seconds.

On day two Waters found himself drawn in the matched sprint against Phillipe Vernet, World Masters Champion and 1986 Olympian.

After a tactical first lap he was eventually beaten by half a bike length.

The French man went on to win the gold medal.

On day five Waters finished a good sixth in the team sprint, riding with a composite team.

The Wheelers promoted the annual inter club time trial between the Lincoln Wheelers and the Gainsborough Aiger on the Torworth circuit last Tuesday.

Wheelers star Dominic Smith was a clear winner with a time of 21 minutes 18 seconds for the nine and a half miles.

The full result will appear in next weeks report.

In the mid week TLI road race at Stainton, Alan Hazard was the Wheelers only representative.

He finished 16th in the elite group.

Last weekend's Retford Wheelers Three Bridge's club run had a dual purpose, in meeting the needs of the leisure rider and those who were wanting a 'sportive' ride.

Leaving Retford for Dunham and on to Torksey lock, the group split at Gainsborough.

Some headed for Retford while the more competitive rode towards Keadby.

There was some powerful riding displayed from Matt Wylde, Glen Allison and Keith Rolfe.

The club run this Sunday will be to Cleethorpes, about 112 miles

Guest riders welcome, meet in the market square at 8am.
