Tommy Simpson reliability ride
Thirteen riders from the Retford and District Wheelers joined dozens of other riders from around the region to participate in the Tommy Simpson Memorial reliability trial on Sunday.
Promoted by the Dinnington Racing Club, this annual ride is one of the first opportunities of the year for local riders to test their fitness against each other.
Whilst not a race in the strictest sense, there is a certain amount of competition between individuals and clubs.
After leaving the Harworth Sports Pavilion the 60-mile circuit followed a route to Scrooby along the Great North Road to Retford, and on to Clayworth and Gringley before following the River Trent down to West Butterwick from where the riders would head for Hadfield Woodhouse and back to Bawtry and Harworth.
Most of the Wheelers were pleased with their performance on the day, but worthy of mention was the level of fitness being displayed by 40-year-old Robert McKinnon who has made impressive progress since starting cycling only last year.
The club run this Sunday is to Bilsthorpe, the route will be a bit hilly after Ollerton and the total distance will be about 60 miles, participants can expect to be back in Retford by 2pm.
Meet in the market square at 9am, new riders and guest riders always welcome.
