Sports stars get special recognition

THE finest and most dedicated sport stars in the region were given some well deserved recognition last week.

The 13th annual Bassetlaw Sports Awards took place at North Notts Arena in Worksop, with an Olympian in attendance.

Sarah Winckless, an Olympic bronze medal winner and two-time World rowing champion, provided the inspiration and encouraged the assembled budding sport stars.

Among the awards were Retford Swimming Club's Matthew Greenwood, pictured right receving his award, Trevor Baker who helps people with disabilities to become involved in sport, Retford Gym Club's Carole Brinkley, speed skater Jacob Porter, ice dancer Katie Louise Bagnall, athlete Alex Macdonald, Bridon cricket legend Gareth Jones and swimming teacher for young people with disabilities Nina Emblen.

For full coverage, pictures and interviews, see the special three page report in this week's Worksop Guardian.
