Smith continues form for Wheelers

RETFORD Wheelers' up and coming teenage star Dominic Smith has continued his good run of form.

Riding in the midweek 9.5-mile evening event, promoted by the Harworth and District Cycling Club, he once more improved his personal best time for the Torworth-Sutton-Mattersey-Ranskill course.

Smith returned a superb 21 minutes 03 seconds to take first place, from Gavin Hodgson of the promoting club, who recorded 22 minutes 17 seconds.

Alan Hazard finished in 22 minutes 29 seconds.

Other club riders' times were P. Ieronimo 22-38; I. Freshney 24-02; D. Battersby 25-05; G. Waters 26-01 and B. Hazard 27-53.

Time trial specialist Tony Keyworth rode in the South Elmsall CC 10-mile time trial on the Hadfield Woodhouse course at the weekend.

Held in warm conditions, but with a strong southerly wind to contend with, he finished with a time of 24 minutes 57 seconds.

Alan Hazard had similar conditions for his race on the Etwall course where he still managed a 25 miles per hour ride, recording 59 minutes 31 seconds for the 25 miles.

At the Forest Town Track League, Paul Austin was first in the 12 lap scratch race and fourth in the 10-mile scratch event.

In the junior events Matt Waters was first in the eight-lap scratch and the sprint and second in the six-lap hare and hounds event.

Elsewhere, Graeme Waters represented the Wheelers at the British Masters Track Championship, which held at the Welsh National Velodrome last week.

Riding in the 45-49 age group he recorded a personal best time of 55.886 seconds for the 750 meters time trial, ranking him in 13th place in the competition.

Last Sunday's club run was a short ride to give new riders the experience of riding with a club.

Seventeen riders set out on a route through Gringley to Haxey and across Park Drain to Wroot where refreshment was taken.

The return journey was by way of Finningley and Bawtry.

The club ride this Sunday will be to the Humber Bridge.

The route will be reasonably flat and the distance will be about 120 miles.

Meet in the market square at the earlier time of 8am.

Experienced guest riders are more than welcome.
