Riders out in force

CLUB riders throughout the region were out in force last weekend, taking advantage of the first days of ice free roads since before Christmas.

The Retford and District Wheelers were no exception with a good turn out for their first outing this year.

On the race scene club junior champion Matt Waters was invited to participate in a training day at the Manchester Velodrome last Saturday.

The DHL sponsored event saw 50 youngsters aged 13 to 15 from all over the UK riding in a number of events, one of which was a Watt Bike Challenge, a new innovation available to elite riders and the privileged few good enough to be invited to such occasions.

Riding with three other riders as part of a team, Matt finished a respectable fourth place in this event.

The day's training also included a series of six lap Kieran events from which Matt was able to form an assessment of his present level of fitness compared with that of his contemporaries.

Last week's club run was to Misterton, via Bawtry, Misson, Epworth and Oweston Ferry.

The club ride this Sunday will be to Southwell.

The route will be undulating and of about 55 miles in distance.

Meet in the market square at 9am.

New riders always welcome.
