Retford United embargo set to be lifted

RETFORD United have announced that funds have been raised to pay players owed from last season – paving the way for the FA to lift an embargo on the club.

The team's pre-season preperations were dealt a blow last week when a planned friendly against Calverton Miners Welfare was postponed after the FA refused to allow the game to go ahead.

Under FA rules the club cannot take part in any fixtures until the outstanding debts are cleared.

But following Wednesday's announcement that the funds to pay that debt are now in place, the club is now hopeful their pre-season can now begin in earnest.

Chairman Bill Wyles said: "It has taken a lot of hard work but we have finally got there."

"We are delighted and are in the process of talking to the FA to get the embargo lifted as soon as possible so that we can get moving forward."

"How long that will take is down to the FA. They have to be sure that the funds are there. I will be talking to the FA later on this afternoon and hopefully the embargo will be lifted in a matter of days, although I don't think it will be in the next 24 to 48 hours."

Joint manager Jon Knapper said it had been a frustrating time for himself and fellow boss David Lloyd, as well as the players.

"This is a big relief for everybody at the club," said Knapper.

"It's down to the FA now to lift the embargo and I'm hoping to get a call from the chairman soon telling me it will be a matter of days."

"Obviously it is pre-season and you can't replicate the game situation on the training ground. We've been training three times a week for a while now but that's not the same as playing competetive games."

"It has been a frustrating time for the management and players because these pre-season friendlies are perfect for getting everyone match fit for the first game of the season on 21st August."

"We have made arrangements to play some games as early as next week – we're just waiting for the go ahead from the FA now."
