First local time trial for Wheelers

This season's first Retford Wheelers time trial on local roads took place last Saturday.

Based in the village of Ranby, this 18 kilometre annual event, promoted by the North Midlands Veteran Time Trials Association, followed a circuit of Babworth, Barnby Moor, Blyth and back along the A1 to Ranby.

Weather conditions were reasonable for the event, and with the road having been resurfaced along Green Mile, times were going to be respectable.

Despite such bad winter training conditions, Worksop veteran, 62-year-old Tony Keyworth, started from where he left off last season.

He returned with a time of 27 minutes 28 seconds, a near 25mph ride that enabled him to gain 11th place on standard, leaving him and his followers absolutely delighted.

The winner was 44-year-old Lincolnshire visitor Ian Dalton, of the Cherry Valley RT, with a superb time of 23 minutes 30 seconds.

Meanwhile, Wheelers all rounder Paul Austin had another successful training weekend at the Welsh National Velodrome at Newport.

Last Sunday's club run was to Sudbrooke, Lincolnshire.

Sixteen riders made the start and, assisted with a strong tail wind, made good progress along a route which included the villages of Dunham, Torksey, and Bransby, before taking the old Roman Road to Scampton and onwards to the destination.

After a break for refreshment, the return journey was to be much more difficult, with the now strengthening wind head on as the riders passed through the villages of Hackthorn, Spridlington, and Ingham, before the long straight and unsheltered byroad into Stow, onwards to Gainsborough and home.

For some reason the group were not holding their formation as well as on past occasions, and this resulted in a lot of wasted energy and a below average speed for the return journey.

A post ride assessment is planned.

The Retford and District Wheelers will be holding their open 10-mile time trial on the Tuxford course on Saturday.

Club members on marshalling duties should be at Weston village sports pavilion for 1pm.

The club run this Sunday will be to Teversal, a popular ride of about 55 miles in total.

Participants can expect to be back in Retford for 2pm. Meet in the market square at 9am.

New riders welcome.

A POPULAR and well respected Retford Wheelers member has sadly passed away.

Roland Roberts, who was recently diagnosed as terminally ill, died on Tuesday night.

Despite his illness, Roland took part in the club run two weeks ago, with a short ride around the periphery of Retford on a tandem trike piloted by his long term friend Paul Austin, and accompanied by all his club mates.

The Retford and District Wheelers would like to thank Martin Purser of the Tricycle Association for the loan of the tandem, which enabled Roland to fulfil this remarkable achievement.
