Bleak times for Badgers

RETFORD United joint manager David Lloyd is forecasting a bleak opening to the Badgers' Evo-Stik Premier season.

Lloyd, right, and Jon Knapper have had to deal with the crippling effects of an FA imposed embargo this summer.

United, who failed to pay wages owed to players last season, were banned from playing any fixtures by the FA until the outstanding debts were repaid.

This has resulted in a shortened pre-season and left the club in a predicament which Lloyd believes to be 'the toughest situation in the league'.

The FA ruling and the club's financial situation has also meant a restriction in signings, adding further misery to Lloyd's pre-season.

"It has affected all preparations," he said.

"It has been very tough trying to bring the players that we want to bring in."

"We just have to get on with it"

"There is very much a limit to what we can do."

The Badgers boss is making survival in the league his main aim this season, and expects a tough game against Northwich Victoria this weekend at home.

"If we stay in the Evo-Stik Premier League that will be a fantastic success."

"Saturday will tell a story."

"We are as positive as you can be but if we take a point I will be happy, it will be a tough game".

Badgers ended their pre-season with two losses, a 3-0 defeat away at Grantham Town and a 2-0 defeat at home to Blidworth Welfare on Tuesday night.

But several key first team players were rested for the Blidworth game, as the management duo kept one eye on Saturday's league opener.

Badgers will host Northwich Victoria at Cannon Park at 3pm.
