Badgers hope for embargo lift

RETFORD United were hoping for an end to the FA embargo as the Trader Guardian went to print this morning.

Club chairman Bill Wyles told us on Wednesday afternoon that all but two of the former players who were owed money had confirmed to the football authority that the debt had been paid.

He said: "The FA are waiting for the players to confirm that they've been paid."

"We're hoping the last two players will be getting in touch today."

If the embargo is lifted, joint managers Jon Knapper and David Lloyd will be able to field a side in Saturday's scheduled friendly with local rivals Worksop Town, at Cannon Park.

A frustrated Knapper told the Guardian: "We're behind schedule by three weeks and we need to get four games in before the start of the season to take a look at people who we don't know, and play players we do know alongside them."

Although the embargo has stopped the club from signing players, Knapper insists a squad exists and is ready to play – if they get the go ahead for Saturday.

"It's a bit of a nightmare, but we've both discussed it and we've got players through the door and into the club and that's been the hardest part."

"People know about the past and the non payment so it's been really frustrating."

"But the majority of the lads have kept training and we'll keep plodding on."

"We need the game on Saturday and we've scheduled another for Monday if the embargo is lifted, but we can't say any more about that," he added.
