Badgers bounce back at Glapwell
RETFORD shrugged off the disappointment of the loss on Saturday by bouncing back with a strong performance against Glapwell on Tuesday.
Glapwell FC 1 – 3 Retford United
A lively start saw Ryan Hindley's free kick from the left almost met by the incoming Michael Simpkins heading over, then a low cross from Chris Bettney flashed across the face of goal, Hindley unable to reach the ball.
A good move, starting on the United left found Mick Godber playing the ball inside to Neil Harvey with the ball cleared for a corner, however, the Referee awarded a goal kick, much to the bemusement of the United forward.
UniBond First South side Glapwell opened the scoring on 23 minutes, veteran Striker Neil Grayson on hand to nod the ball past a stretched James Lindley as he met a cross from the Glapwell right, then minutes later, he almost doubled the lead as he strode into the United area under pressure, only to put his effort wide.
The Badgers were level on 26 minutes, Mick Godber meeting Bettney's cross to float his header past Andy Richmond, then only five minutes later, United were in front, after a good build up from Godber who played out to Hindley, the winger found Harvey with his back to goal and a neat pass back into the run of Terry Barwick, a summer signing from Stalybridge Celtic, as he made no mistake from the edge of the box to drill the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
United took control, another corner floated in from Bettney forced a good save from Richmond as he rose to tip away, then a run from Lee Thomspon found Harvey who in turn found Hindley, and his ball in was thumped away for a corner.
Dan White ended the half with a superb effort, Hindley's vision saw White running forward, and he beat the offside as the left back raced down the wing. He put in a shot come cross that flew past post from a tight angle as Godber challenged.
The second half was only a minute old when Harvey made it 3-1, the Striker finding himself in front of goal, unchallenged as he had time to set up his shot and cooly shoot with his right foot and into the net.
United did well as Chris Kingston, on as half time replacement for Lindley, was forced to clear from outside his area, the clearance falling to Grayson who saw the keeper scrambling back, only to put the ball wide.
There were a lot of changes throughout the second half, which kept changing the momentum of the game, however it was United who stayed on top, although Glapwell went close though Adam Walker, Kingston was in place to make the save, Godber's cross almost found the oncoming Paul Grimes, Ashley Longstaff saw two efforts over the bar, and Ben Muirhead was unlucky not to finish a good move as he and Longstaff combined well, only for the Triallist to shoot over.
The Badgers now have two more Pre-Season games remaining, they travel to Sheffield FC on Saturday (8th) then they visit Ollerton Town on Tuesday (11th) (7.45pm).
