Badgers bash belper

UniBond One South Retford Utd 3 Belper Town 0

THE BADGERS got back to winning ways on Saturday with a convincing victory against Belper Town.

Peter Duffield gave starts to new signings Tom Cowan and Dan White, with Sheffield United trainee Marc Furniss making his debut in goal for Belper.

United started quickest out of the blocks, Steve Owens breaking down the left and putting in a cross that flashed in front of goal.

Retford were taking control and Cowan's free-kick found the head of Godber with Matt Fisher hitting the knock down at goal, but the blocked effort, fell to Ryan Hindley and his shot was just wide.

Shortly after, another Cowan free-kick found Ben Chambers and he did well in the box to pull the ball back to Owens, but the winger's effort was again wide.

Belper had only one effort of note in the first 45 minutes. Lee Stevenson's free-kick was tipped over the bar by Ross Turner who was relatively untroubled.

The breakthrough came on the stroke of half-time, Hindley winning the ball from Cowan's pass, bursting into the box and slotting the ball past the advancing 'keeper.

The second half started strongly with Fisher having a drive from distance after picking up Harvey's pass.

The second goal came six minutes into the second half.

A free-kick was met by Chambers who couldn't get the touch over the line, but the rebound fell to Harvey who slotted home in the crowded box.

The third goal, in the 73rd minute, killed the game off.

Harvey once again found his way into the box under pressure from Joe Appleyard.

As Harvey tried to twist and turn he was pulled back and Appleyard made a last-ditch lunge at the striker which left the referee no hesitation as he pointed to the spot.

The defender was issued with a straight red card and Mick Godber stepped up to score the penalty and seal a comfortable win.

Retford stay top with the win.
