Badgers back to earth with a bump

RETFORD United got their first league win of the season on Saturday, away at fellow strugglers Burscough.

The victory was followed on Tuesday night by a 3-1 loss at home to Buxton however, and Badgers are still bottom of the Evo-Stik Premier League on goal difference.

At Burscough, David Lloyd and Jon Knapper gave a league debut to Sam Green, a recent signing from Harrogate Railway Athletic, while Niall O'Brien returned after being unavailable for the game against Worksop Town.

Green made way for the match winner on 78 minutes, as Matt Booth entered the fray.

Within two minutes Booth, pictured right celebrating, got the winner.

A flashpoint came on 86 minutes, a challenge between Ryan Hindley and Gary McEvatt led to the pair squaring up, Hindley falling to the ground during the altercation.

The referee sent both players off, and Hindley was helped off the field.

Tuesday's loss brought Retford back to earth with a bump.

The visitors took the lead on 33 minutes, Michael Towey slotting home.

Buxton went two goals ahead after 55 minutes, Towey with his brace.

Less than 10 minutes later, he got his hat-trick to seal the points.

Retford did pull a goal back on 76 minutes, a great free-kick from Jake Vernon finding the net.

UNITED face Mickleover Sports in the FA Cup on Saturday so will be looking to get back to winning ways.
