It’s close in Calcutta cup games

THE quarter-finals of the Gainsborough and District Table Tennis League Calcutta Cup (team handicap) competition have taken place and they produced some good competitive table tennis.

Blitz Bunnies were unable to field a full team so had to concede to stablemates Dingos, while GYM Batmen proved too good for Blues Club Kestrels and beat them without the handicap.

Blues Phoenix had a hard game against Liberal Meteors but with the help of a 125-point handicap they won by one point.

To top that Liberal Dynamos had a 140-point handicap in their match against Liberal Beacons and finished all-square, meaning a replay will need to be arranged.

Results: Batmen 361 (M. Longstaff 121, T. Lovely 100, K. Eliot 110, plus 30pts handicap), Kestrels 304 (D. Wass 95, D. Mason 117, S. Mason 92); Dynamoes 365 (P. Cooper 30, J. Colley 104, J. Cooper 91, plus 104pts handicap), Beacons 365 (P. Dixon 126, D. Brumpton 118, B. Garner 121); Meteors 357 (R. Ellis 126, C. Derry 105, M. Betts 126), Phoenix 358 (R. Simon 81, B. Reed 86, D. Shelley 66, plus 125pts handicap).

At the beginning of the season each team captain was furnished with forms to nominate the most sporting player, but as yet only two have been returned.

Any players interested in playing in this year’s summer league which starts on 13th May at Ropery Road Liberal Club is asked to inform the league secretary.

Last year’s players wishing to play this year are asked to return their Liberal Club membership cards to the league secretary for updating purposes as soon as possible.
