The time has come for the new football season to begin.
It doesn’t seem two minutes since last season ended on a bit of a flat note. We didn’t go up and finished in a mediocre mid-table position which was nothing to shout about.
The closed season brought with it so much optimism. We had a multi-millionaire chairman who promised to plough cash into the club and a manager raring to go and build a team good enough to get promotion.
With the start of the season just days away, my optimism has faded a little.
There hasn’t been all the big signings most Wednesday fans expected and Milan Mandaric hasn’t flashed his cash, but on the positive side we’ve looked promising in our pre-season games.
The last was on Saturday against Stoke in which we achieved a hard fought out 0-0 draw against a side full of Premier League players.
Megson was impressed by the fitness of his team, but felt the game highlighted the need to sign another striker.
This is one area that Megson hasn’t strengthened this summer, which hasn’t been through his lack of trying.
Wednesday have been linked to numerous players including Norwich’s Cody McDonald, Rotherham’s Adam Le Fondre and Rochdale striker Chris O’Grady and even had Irish striker Padraig Amond on loan, but so far none have signed for the club.
Yet come Saturday at 3pm I, like all Wednesdayites, will be 100 per cent behind Gary Megson and the team - whatever his starting 11 - as we face Rochdale.
And at 5pm hopefully we will have three points in the bag and the best start possible to our season.
If we can’t be optimistic at the start of the season and be confident that League One promotion will be ours come May then when can we be?
Let’s all be positive and get behind Megson and the players - come on you blue and white wizards!
Up the Owls!
