Retford United will take an unbeaten record into Saturday’s FA Cup preliminary round tie against Holwell Sports.
Last week the Badgers added victories over Stapenhill and Armthorpe Welfare to the three draws that began their 2014/15 season.
In the FA Cup, Retford were 3-1 winners at Stapenhill in a replay last Wednesday night.
The goals came courtesy of Leigh Hutchinson and a Liam Wilkin double.
On Saturday, United were on their travels again, this time making the short trip to Armthorpe in NCEL Premier action.
A crowd of almost 100 watched Retford claim their first league win of the season – despite the absence of eight regular players.
They were unalbe to call upon the services of Reece Thompson and Jordan Cooper who were both suspended along with Tom Fuller, Bobby Johnson, Kyle Hadley, Liam Wilkin, James Young and Rich Smith who all had prior or work commitments.
The opener came just before half-time, when Liam Nelthorpe provided a pinpoint cross for Hutchinson to dive under the challenge of Josh Gibbons and power a superb header into the net.
On 75 minutes, Gibbons brought Hutchinson down in the box as he couldn’t keep up with the Retford striker, and Hutchinson stepped up to score his second of the afternoon.
In stoppage time, Ben Muirscored against his former club, winning the ball on the right before getting into the box and keeping his balance, hitting the ball under the advancing keeper and into the empty net.
Retford now host East Midlands Counties League side Holwell Sports on Saturday afternoon at the Jones & Co Stadium at 3pm.
