IT seems like only the other day that last season drew to a close, but now here we are on the cusp of the new season.
This Saturday Danny Wilson’s Sheffield United head to Oldham, the first of 46 league games which all Blades fans hope will end in promotion back to the Championship.
Yesterday (Sunday) the team faced their final pre-season test a home match against Blackpool.
It was a decent workout and there were some very promising signs going into the new season.
Chris Porter got on the score sheet for United and the match ended in a 1-1 draw against a team who were last season playing in the Premier League.
But pre season friendlies are a far cry from the nitty gritty of league action. The real test will come at Boundary Park on Saturday.
Only then will we see what sort of shape our beloved Blades are in, and how well equipped we are for life in League One.
Danny Wilson for one will be desperate to get off to a good start.
Although much of the ill-feeling towards his appointment has died down considerably, a defeat at Oldham could lead to tensions coming back to boiling point again.
Oldham has been a happy hunting ground for the Blades in the past. I remember one particular visit 20 years ago or so, and Oldham were unbeaten at home in over year on their notorious artificial pitch.
But that unbeaten run was well and truly ended and the Blades came away with a famous 2-0 win, Brian Deane grabbing one of the goals with a fine lob.
Lets just hope come 5pm this Saturday we are celebrating an equally impressive win.
