Retford United extended too courteous a welcome to Heanor Town on Saturday, to the Jones and Co Stadium, as they were beaten 4-0.

The Badgers also suffered the indignity of one player scoring all four of the visitors’ goals.

There was a debut for Sam Jones as Richard Sennett made changes to the side that lost 3-2 to Staveley in the previous game, with Reece Thompson, Gav Cooper, and Paddy Mullen all dropping to the bench.

Jones came in along with Andy Walkden, Richard Medcalf and Liam Wilkin.

The debutant almost bagged his first goal with a shot that looked on target before being deflected wide.

Heanor went on a quick break, Jared Holmes powering forward but Jody Barford was down to make the save.

Kieran Debrouwer had a good effort for the visitors, but his header was blocked, before the follow up was hooked off the line by Danny Smith.

Momentum swung the other way, Jones seeing a shot intercepted.

A shot by Wilkin was pushed round the post by Mark Frost, then Retford made nothing of two corners.

The inevitable goal came on 28 minutes, Debrouwer out on the right firing in a superb dipping shot that had Barford beaten.

Kyle Hadley had a drive from distance, then Wilkin saw his header just over, but they went in 1-0 down at the break.

Nathan Benger almost had the visiting supporters cheering early in the second half, but he put the ball the wrong side of the post from close range.

On 69 minutes, Heanor were two up, Debrouwer with his second, the ball crossed in from the right, Debrouwer forcing Barford to drop the ball so he could slot home.

Retford never looked like getting back into the game, and in the 78th minute, Debrouwer got his hat-trick as he slid the ball past Barford and in off the far post.

Then his fourth came four minutes later with an easychance, getting past the defence to slip the ball past the advancing keeper.

United are due to face another tough game against Barton Town away on Wednesday evening as the Guardian goes to print, and that will be followed up by another tricky fixture away at Thackley FC on Saturday.
