Retford United’s pre-season preparations came to an end on Tuesday evening players from all three Senior Squads were used for a practice match.
Two teams were used in a ‘battle of the club match’ with a mixture of first team, reserves and Under 19s mixed up with the Yellows coming out on top.
Reece Thompson scored a hat-trick, his first goal coming in the 10th minute before he doubled the lead six minutes later to give coach Liam Slack something to smile about as he took charge of the Yellows.
Jack Ward pulled a goal back for the Stripes on 35 minutes, with the opposition looking to have levelled the scores shortly before the break only for it to be ruled out for offside.
The second half was 10 minutes old when Bobby Johnson should have equalised, but his free-kick over the wall was acrobatically tipped over the bar by the keeper.
The Yellows increased their lead on 57 minutes through defender Graeme Severn, only for four minutes later y Johnson to find the net for the Stripes to make it 3-2.
The goals were coming thick and fast, Thompson’s hat-trick on 64 minutes followed by a second for Severn on 71 minutes had the game sewn up.
This was a good workout for all players involved and provided entertainment for the 50 supporters who had turned up as the new season fast approaches.
The Northern Counties East League Premier season starts on Saturday with the visit of Barton Town to the Jones & Co Stadium.
Retford United then face a midweek trip to West Yorkshire next Tuesday, to take on Liversedge FC in the second game of the new 2013/14 campaign.
