Dinning crash out of Sheffield Senior Cup

SHEFFIELD SENIOR CUP

Dinnington Town 0

Frechville CA 1

DINNINGTON Town crashed out of the Senior Cup at the first hurdle, in their game against County Senior side Frechville CA.

They fielded a near full strength side but were without influential midfielder Matt Smith after his head injury on Saturday.

For the first 15 minutes thy attacked brightly with some smooth football, but fell behind when John Higgins collected the ball on the edge of the area and slotted home past home keeper Mark Toyne.

After a stoppage lasting a few minutes for an injury to Frechville’s keeper, Town continued to press but never really tested the opposition’s substitute keeper.

In the second half Town adopted a long ball tactic which was easily dealt with by the away defence.

A series of tactical changes and substitutions produced a disjointed game but Town never really looked like getting the equaliser which would have forced extra-time, and Frechville hung on for a deserved victory.

Town will be relieved to return to league action on Saturday when they travel to Hemsworth Miners Welfare at 3pm.

l ON Saturday Town beat Selby Town 4-2 at home thanks to a treble from veteran striker Liam Cartledge.

The front man netted a pair of penalties, after levelling the game on 18 minutes.

Ryan Smith had given Selby the lead at Phoenix Park, until Cartledge struck the first of his hat-trick.

Greg Ramsden made it 2-2 in the second half, after Smith’s second had Selby ahead once again.

And the two penalties from Cartledge secured the points for Town.
