Gainsborough Trinity assistant manager Darryn Stamp is pleased with the side’s progress in training as the pre-season fixtures get under way.

The Blues host Sheffield Wednesday on Friday after starting their warm-up for the upcoming season against Scunthorpe United on Tuesday, and the former Iron striker says he was impressed with how the players looked in training.

“They are actually looking really sharp,” said Stamp.

“They all seem to have looked after themselves over the summer break which is very important – it means we can concentrate on the football rather than just basic fitness.”

The club have 10 pre-season fixtures inked in for the coming weeks, and Stamp says that the busy schedule was a conscious decision to bring the squad together.

“It gives us a good chance to have a look at what we’ve got and try a few things, but it’s more about getting the players on the pitch.”

“We’ve still got nearly six weeks until the first game. Can you imagine six weeks of pre-season training with just a handful of games?”

“Players are better playing games than just constantly training at this stage of the season.”

Stamp himself admits that he is still a few weeks away from fitness, but is glad of the chance to observe from the sidelines as he gets used to his new role.

“I’ve been able to get a feel for the role, which has been a bonus.”

“It’s given me the opportunity to take a step back, look over the players and assess how we’re doing and where we need to improve.”

The 34-year old – who holds a degree in Sports Coaching and Performance – got his first taste of management against his former club on Tuesday night, and says he is delighted with the attitude of the current crop of players.

“We did well to keep the nucleus of last season’s squad together after Peter Swan left.”

“It’s a good solid core that we’ve added to, and the players obviously haven’t stayed here for the money.”

“We have 13 players signed on at present including myself.”

“Obviously we’ll be looking to add to that before the first game of the season.”
